Post-Research Statement of Intent
After conducting extensive preliminary research on the ident produced for prominent broadcasters such as BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Eurosport and completing relevant experiments, I have formulated a plan to create a final piece (or multiple pieces) for the client “XSport” that incorporates elements from these broadcasters.
One aspect that I particularly appreciate is Eurosport’s use of dramatic coloured lighting to enhance the visual appeal of their content. I will attempt to achieve a similar effect in my videos for the final piece by using creative lighting techniques.
Additionally, I will create a smooth and visually appealing logo animation in Adobe After Effects, drawing inspiration from ITV’s animated logo. This animation will be imported into my Premiere Pro project to add an extra layer of professionalism to the final product.
The ident that I will create will feature a sportsperson as the main subject. They may be using a prop such as a cricket bat, hockey stick or ball to add an extra layer of visual interest. The background will be dark to create a sense of mystery and to allow the subject to stand out against it. I will use a lighting rig positioned on two sides of the subject to project contrasting coloured light onto the subject, creating the dramatic style that I am aiming for.
In order to add variety and visual interest to the ident, I will make use of a wide range of camera movements and angles. I will also record at a high framerate so that the footage can be slowed down in post-production to create some slow-motion shots. The editing process will primarily take place in Adobe Premiere Pro; however, I will also use Adobe After Effects (as mentioned earlier) in order to create some motion graphics elements such as the logo animation.
My ident will be fast-paced and dynamic, featuring various jump-cuts and transitions such as split-screens and slices. The mood that I aim to convey is one of intense competition and action. The ident will last approximately 15 seconds and as well as fast-moving visuals, I intend to use a high-energy soundtrack to add to the drama and excitement.

Process
I opened a new Premiere Pro project and imported all of my video clips and music files.
I then edited the music to last only 17 seconds.
I then placed all of my clips to the beat of the music as appropiate and added the speed ramp transition from my 3rd experiment and my logo animation from my 2nd experiment.
Finally I polished everything up and added some basic colour correction.
Final Piece
Evaluation
I began my research by taking a look at the idents produced for prominent broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Eurosport. From this I planned to create an ident for a new sports broadcaster named “X Sport”.
I took inspiration from different elements of the researched idents including the motion found in the BBC’s idents, the smooth logo animation featured by ITV and the cinematic lighting and fast-paced editing used by Eurosport.
When I took my photographs and videos I tried to do something similar to Eurosport’s dramatic lighting, I used a lighting rig on two sides of the subject which lit the sportsperson in two contrasting colours. I also created a logo animation inspired by the forward motion in ITV’s logo animation.
I also experimented with different camera angles and movement to add some variety.
My experiments helped me to formulate a plan for my final piece which, during the editing process, I had to deviate from as I found out what worked and what didn’t.
I am overall quite pleased with my final piece; however, I wish I could have had more time to add some more effects on the clips and do some more advanced colour grading. Also, If I’d had more time I would’ve liked to create a set of complementing idents instead of just the one.
I also would have planned my photoshoots better as I ended up with a lot of very similar photos and videos – I would have liked to capture a greater variety of sports and used more different camera angles.
I set out to create an engaging and dramatic ident and I think I managed to create a piece which adhered to my intent well and I believe it would be approved by ‘X Sport’.
